GENERAL union GMB has launched a fund to back Sheffield workers in an eight-month dispute in which two shop stewards have been sacked.
GMB launched strikes after senior managers at council contractor The Green Co — all members of the union — were sacked following their query over a company payment of thousands of pounds to a printer owned by chairwoman Martine Laffan-Butler.
The Green Co runs four Sheffield waste recycling depots under contract to the council through Veolia.
Set up by charity Salvaire, The Green Co has now attacked wages and working conditions.
In December two GMB stewards, Jim Rodgers and Gordon Parkes, were sacked after leading a walkout.
When the strike ended the company warned the workforce — several of whom have learning disabilities — that they would face disciplinary action if they went on strike again. Three disabled workers were given final written warnings.
But Sheffield council said that it could not order Veolia to cancel The Green Co’s contract due to legal implications.
