Burkina Faso At least 15 soldiers killed in suspected jihadist bomb attack in Burkina Faso

AT LEAST 15 soldiers were killed in Burkina Faso in a suspected jihadist bomb attack, the country’s armed forces confirmed on Tuesday evening, the latest in a series of attacks.

The twin blasts using “improvised explosive devices occurred on the road from Bourzanga to Djibo” in the centre-north region, the army general staff said.

“The toll for both incidents is 15 fallen soldiers and one wounded.”

The convoy was struck while it was on an escort mission, an army statement said.

“One of the vehicles in the convoy, which was carrying troops, hit an explosive device near Namsiguia district in Bam province,” it added.

The bombing comes soon after at least 17 people were killed near Mali’s border with Burkina Faso as soldiers fought to repel an attack from Islamic State in the Greater Sahara.

Jihadists in Mali have launched cross border raids on Burkina Faso and neighbouring Niger since 2015.

At least 1.9 million people have been forced to flee their homes in Burkina Faso and thousands have been killed.

More than 40 per cent of the country remains outside government control.
