SCOTTISH LABOUR has accused the SNP of “posturing but not delivering” as it reveals today that no progress has been made on the pledge to establish a Scottish City of Refuge.
The SNP’s 2021 manifesto promised to “work with local authorities across Scotland – starting with Glasgow – to create the first Scottish Cities of Refuge.”
But in response to a written question, the Scottish government said that no progress had been made towards delivering this pledge, according to Scottish Labour, and work would not even begin until “later in the parliamentary term.”
It comes after the government halted its super sponsor scheme and instead housed hundreds of Ukrainian refugees on a cruise ship.
Scottish Labour external affairs spokesperson Sarah Boyack said: “The SNP’s decision to kick this policy into the long grass is another blow to their claims to be standing up for refugees.
“As is so often the case with this timid government they are posturing but not delivering.
“We need to lead the way in actions as well as words when it comes to welcoming refugees to Scotland.”
Ms Boyack said the SNP “must stop dragging their heels and deliver this pledge with the urgency and ambition needed.”
