Tories move quickly to sneak in work funds cap

JUST hours after the ballot counting finished yesterday, the Tories were already proposing a cap on access to work funds for people with disabilities.

The Department for Work and Pensions quietly issued a report on its website outlining plans.

Access to work money is offered to those who are in, or about to start, employment and need funding or assistance with travel, equipment and support.

A total of £108 million was spent on nearly 36,000 people in 2013-14 with the majority having hearing difficulties, blindness and back or neck injuries.

The DWP is considering a cap on the maximum value of support per person in need.

It is claimed that limiting spending would “support more customers.”

The department is also thinking about setting an “absolute cap” equivalent to Britain’s average salary of just over £27,000.

This shows a “saving” of nearly £8m.

The report states: “For any cap, the majority of users affected would be deaf or hearing loss customers.

“There would also be a greater impact upon visually impaired users as the next biggest single group.”
