SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon was the most popular politician on Twitter during the general election, analyists said yesterday.
The SNP leader was 14 points ahead of Tory Prime Minister David Cameron, according to analytics firm Adoreboard.
Ms Sturgeon’s Twitter handle received over 163,000 mentions, 71 per cent of them positive, compared to Mr Cameron who had 145,405 mentions, with only 64 per cent of them positive.
Ms Sturgeon’s popularity helped the SNP win a stunning 56 of Scotland’s 59 seats in last week’s general election.
But former SNP leader Alex Salmond, who is returning to Westminster, stirred up troubled yesterday by contradicting Ms Sturgeon’s claim that their success would not lead to a second independence referendum.
Mr Salmond was clear that “this is the latest staging post” to independence in an interview this weekend.
Ms Sturgeon insisted there was no disagreement with Mr Salmond, but added she did not see their election result “as an endorsement of independence.”
