ANGRY protesters surged through the capital Bucharest at the weekend, demanding an end to illegal mass logging of forests in the Carpathian and to government collusion in the crime.
Thousands of demonstrators carried banners proclaiming: “United we can save the forests” and “Deforestation is a crime.”
They accused political parties of allowing the illegal logging of large swathes of woodland to produce floorboards and heating pellets for Austria and Germany.
Romania’s virgin forests were strictly protected until 1989, but illegal logging has become a big problem since the restoration of capitalism.
President Klaus Iohannis called the protests “legitimate” and said that illegal logging would be discussed at the next national security meeting.
