Boris and Carrie Johnson cancel Chequers wedding party

BORIS and Carrie Johnson are no longer planning to host a wedding party at Chequers later this year.

The couple were reportedly set to hold a function at the prime ministerial residence, despite Mr Johnson now serving his final days in office as caretaker leader.

They married in a low-key, private ceremony at Westminster Cathedral last year.

A small group of family and friends attended the highly secret wedding, followed by a reception in the gardens of 10 Downing Street.

It was known Mr and Ms Johnson planned to have a larger celebration in this year, when coronavirus restrictions were likely to be relaxed.

It had been suggested that Mr Johnson wanted to stay on as a caretaker prime minister in part to see this through, though this has been denied by Downing Street.

But the Mirror cited two separate sources as saying that the pair were keen to go ahead with the celebration.

It has now been reported that they are plan to move the event to a different location.

Earlier, newly installed Education Secretary James Cleverly told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I suspect that it would be a rather generous action of the new prime minister to allow that to go ahead.”
