HUNDREDS of people took part in a march and vigil in memory of Zara Aleena, the law graduate killed on her way home in east London.
Crowds dressed in white for the vigil, which was also a protest against violence against women. At least 52 women have been killed in Britain this year where the main suspect was male, according to the Counting Dead Women project.
Ms Aleena was returning home from a night out at 2.17am last Sunday when she was attacked by a stranger just minutes from her home in Ilford.
The 35-year-old’s family led crowds on Saturday along the route she would have taken.
A vigil was also staged in Dewsbury in West Yorkshire at the weekend.
One of the organisers, Tanisha Bramwell, said: “This protest is to stand in solidarity and to raise the awareness that women don’t feel safe and that this does not lie with preventative measures for women that we have all been taught from a young age. It should start with educating young men.”
Jordan McSweeney, 29, from Dagenham, has been charged with Ms Aleena’s murder, as well as attempted rape and robbery.
