Tory majority sends Salford students into occupation

SALFORD University was occupied this week as campaigners protested against the effects of the new Conservative majority on the lives of students.

Around 20 members of the Salford Feminist Society took over a campus building on Monday afternoon for a seven-hour sit-in that activists hoped would lead to a “wider movement” against privatisation.

“We are aware that the Conservative re-election will affect students, specifically the most vulnerable — international students and disabled students — and we wanted to show our resistance,” co-organiser Lauren Kennedy told the Star.

“Also, after being made aware of recent firings of union members at the university, we felt we had to make it apparent to the university that there was an opposition to their actions.”
