Jameis Winston filed a counterclaim on Friday against Erica Kinsman, who accused the former Florida State University quarterback of rape in December 2012.
Winston — who recently joined the Tamba Bay Buccaneers on a four-year £14.89 million contract — was cleared by the university after a two-day student conduct hearing last year and has not been charged, tried or convicted. He maintains that what occurred was consensual and that he is supported by medical evidence and two teammate witnesses.
Kinsman filed a lawsuit two weeks before Winston was drafted into the US National Football League (NFL), accusing him of rape, assault, false imprisonment and emotional distress.
But the counterclaim argues that Kinsman is motivated by greed and that Kinsman’s accusations “maliciously and impermissibly interfered with Mr Winston’s business and personal relationships,” which has led to a loss of earnings in regards to sponsorship deals and damage to his “reputation and public image.”
