POST-APOCALYPTIC warrior Mad Max, created in 1979 by Mel Gibson who reprised the role twice, returns bigger and better in this latest from the franchise.

There’s plenty of plot but all you need to know to enjoy the rousing action-heavy entertainment is that Max Rockatansky, powerfully portrayed by Tom Hardy, is back to join forces with Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa and save the pregnant “brides” of ruthless ruler Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne).

Cue lashings of adrenaline-surging action — chases featuring weird vehicles, shootouts galore and enough stunning stunts to warrant creating an Oscar for stuntmen.

Hardy earns laurels for recreating Mad Max bigger and better as a man of few words and lethal intent when needed, Theron is suitably tough and shaven-headed and Nicolas Hoult holds his own as shirtless hero Nux.

But it’s action, not acting, that counts. 

And director George Miller delivers it a-plenty.
