US: Crash train at twice limit

THE Amtrak train that derailed in the US city of Philadelphia on Tuesday was travelling at 106 miles per hour — over twice the 50mph speed limit.

Investigators have decided to give train driver Brandon Bostian two days to recover from his ordeal before interviewing him.

Mr Bostian’s lawyer said his client, who suffered head wounds and concussion, had no memory of the crash.

Amtrak faces difficult questions over why it had not installed new safety systems that prevent trains exceeding the speed limit on that section of track, despite pressure from Congress and safety regulators.

“Based on what we know right now, we feel that had such a system been installed in this section of track, this accident would not have occurred,” said National Transportation Safety Board lead investigator Robert Sumwalt.
