Left writerspeaks out over abuse

A LEFT-WING writer who stood as an MP spoke out yesterday about the “hideous” abuse he faced following claims that he had compared some English people in Wales with Nazis, writes Luke James.

Mike Parker, who came second in Ceredigion for Plaid Cymru, said the “smear” against him by his Lib Dem rivals set a “new benchmark in filth.”

It stemmed from a 2001 article written by the English author, who himself moved to mid-Wales, which warned that others moving to the area from England were motivated by a desire to “get away from black and Asian people.”

Mr Parker said he wrote the article after former BNP leader Nick Griffin had moved to mid-Wales, but his opponents called for his resignation.

He revealed: “I had doors slammed in my face, people spitting and screaming at me in the street that I was a ‘fucking nazi.’

“It was hideous — the absolute antithesis of what we like to believe is our democracy.”
