FOOD workers condemned Tory ministers for “allowing the drowning of refugees at sea” today.
A majority of delegates gathered in Staffordshire for the bakers’ union’s annual conference backed a motion which said that helping those in need is the “mark of a decent human being.”
Member Dougie Johnston said: “I have nothing but respect and admiration for these people who have had to flee war and dictatorships and risk their lives in dinghies to cross the English Channel or the Mediterranean.
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of them – Kurdish, Palestinians, Iraqis, Yemenis. My heart goes out to them.”
Mr Johnston branded Home Secretary Priti Patel a “maniac,” saying: “She is the daughter of refugees and yet she’s perfectly happy to see children drown in the Med.
“She’s perfectly happy to see the Channel turned into a graveyard.
“Shouldn’t we open up our arms and say we’re all humans and we’re going to help those in most need.”
In response to some delegates who argued that people-traffickers carried most of the blame, member John Fox said: “I blame the government for putting up barriers in the first place.”
