Away from Newbury for night on the tiles

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

The Lockinge Stakes (Newbury 3.45) is the major race of the day and features one of the biggest fields for this group-one event for many a year.

The mare Integral receives weight all-round and should be in the mix despite the in-and-out form of the Sir Michael Stoute yard, but I much prefer the claims of last year’s 2,000 guineas’ hero Night of Thunder and the rapidly improving four-year-old Moohaarib.

The selection should in my eyes have won the Lincoln Handicap, but wasn’t given the best of rides that day and to a certain extent ran pretty green before running on very strongly to finish third.

But he then stepped up on that effort by effortlessly winning a conditions race at Ascot.

That was on unfamiliar fast ground, but he flowed over that surface like a class animal so whatever the weather does he shouldn’t be inconvenienced.

Of course it is going to take another mighty step up in class for him to win here, but he has the scope and the engine to do so and he gets the nod over Night of Thunder.

Richard Hannon’s yard hasn’t really hit top form at the moment and although last year’s Newmarket hero will rightly start favourite anything in double figures about the selection looks the each-way value.

The London Gold Cup at 3.10 is always a competitive event for three-year-olds over a mile-and-a-quarter and the form normally stands the test of time.

Many of the runners will be racing over a mile and a quarter for the first time and that trip should suit Godolphin’s Space Age perfectly.

He is making his three-year-old debut here, but came up against some useful juveniles last year before landing a Beverley maiden in good style and anything around the 10/1 mark would be worth considering.

Dissolution would relish a fast run race, while both Gibeon and Dutch Uncle are also respected in a hugely open affair.

Over at Thirsk, On the Tiles is my each-way call in the 3.05, but my main bet on the card will be Ginger Jack in the 3.40.

He ran well in the Thirsk Hunt Cup two outings back and was far from disgraced on ground way too soft at Chester.

Back to his optimum trip of a mile, the eight-year-old veteran can see off his younger rivals in the shape of Shahdaroba from the in-form David O’Meara yard and outsider Orion’s Bow.

Over at Doncaster the well handicapped Save the Bees will relish the soft ground in the 5.45, while over at Newmarket have a second look at Brave Zolo in the 2.50 and then later on at a bigger price, Elusivity in the finale at 5.10.Si
