THREE United States anti-nuclear campaigners were freed on Saturday after two years’ imprisonment for sabotage.
Micahal Walli, Greg Boertje-Obed and 85-year-old nun Megan Rice were jailed in 2013 for vandalising a uranium storage bunker at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The facility was built to enrich uranium for the first atomic bombs and now manufactures components for nuclear weapons.
An appeals court in Cincinnati overturned their convictions last week and ordered that their sentences for a lesser charge of injuring government property be reviewed.
They were released on Saturday after an emergency petition by their lawyer Marc Shapiro.
“They are undoubtedly relieved to be returning to family and friends,” he said.
Mr Boertje-Obed’s wife Michele Naar-Obed, who previously served three years for anti-nuclear protests, said: “It was worth it.”
