Turkey: Six injured as bombers target left-wing party headquarters

TWO bombs targeted branch offices of a Turkish left-wing party in the south of the country yesterday, three weeks before elections.

A parcel bomb and one in a pot of flowers exploded some 10 minutes apart at the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) offices in the cities of Adana and Mersin.

Six executive members and workers at the party’s local offices were hurt in Adana, the HDP said in a statement.

The attack on the Mersin office came hours before HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas was scheduled to visit the city to deliver a speech and the day after he held an election rally in Adana.

The HDP, a fraternal ally of the Kurdish Democratic Regions Party, is expected to do well in the June 7 general election, possibly preventing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party from getting a big enough majority to change the constitution.
