Hundreds oppose rally by ‘Robinson's’ racists

HUNDREDS of anti-racists marched and rallied in the Shropshire town of Telford on Saturday to oppose a gathering called by  prominent fascist “Tommy Robinson,” accusing him of exploiting child grooming in his campaign of race hatred.

One grooming victim told more than 300 protesters that her suffering had been used by the far right to spread hatred — and that when she objected, she was “attacked relentlessly” by racists.

The victim, named as Caitlin, said: “I have been called a race traitor and a liar.

“They have told me I should kill myself.”

Mr Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, had called for nationwide support for a rally of racists in Telford on Saturday.

About 400 turned up, half the number that attended a rally in January.

Defying Mr Yaxley-Lennon’s exploitation of the issue, Caitlin told counterprotesters: “I was groomed, trafficked and exploited from my early teens.

"Yes, some perpetrators were Pakistani men … but they were also British … Australian … Italian.

“It’s not the culture or skin colour of the person that causes the abuse.

“It absolutely sickens me to see them raise money supposedly for victims when they do nothing to help them and in fact retraumatise them.”

Shropshire and Telford Trades Union Council president Ash Silverstone told the anti-racist rally: “This cynical attempt by far-right figures such as Robinson to fan the flames of racism and division by exploiting victims of horrific child sexual exploitation needs to be seen for exactly what it is — exploitation.”

The counterdemonstration was organised by Shropshire Trades Council and Stand Up to Racism with support from Unite Against Fascism and Love Music Hate Racism.

Mr Yaxley-Lennon’s failure to mobilise more support adds to his current woes, including failure to pay £100,000 in damages to a Syrian child refugee he libelled in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

After teenager Jamal Hijazi was brutally attacked and beaten in the playground of his school, an attack that was recorded on video, Mr Yaxley-Lennon falsely accused the boy of “attacking young English girls.”

Solicitor Tasmine Akunjee, representing Mr Hijazi, said: “The abuse my client, refugee and schoolboy Jamal, suffered ultimately led to him and his family having to leave their home.

“He had to abandon his education. Yaxley-Lennon was responsible for this harm, some of the scars of which are likely to last for many years, if not a lifetime.”
