Zelensky accuses Russia of acting with impunity because of its status as a nuclear power

UKRAINIAN President Volodomyr Zelensky has accused Russia of acting with impunity because of its status as a nuclear power.

He was addressing the Chatham House think tank when he said that Moscow was committing war crimes and suggested that Russia believes it would not be held accountable because it is a nuclear state.

Mr Zelensky condemned the “beastly attitude” of Russian forces in the eastern port city of Mariupol where they were accused of breaching a ceasefire today, hampering evacuations.

“There will be a military tribunal for the killing, the death, the torture. But why this cruelty?”

Fighting continues in the eastern Donbass region which western intelligence sources believe will be the site of a major Russian offensive on or around May 9, when parades will be held to mark the anniversary of victory over fascism.

Mr Zelensky indicated that he would accept a peace deal in which Russian forces retreated to positions they held before the invasion of February 24.
