Seamour Ecclestone at Haydock today

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

The Temple Stakes at Haydock Park (3.45) is the big race of the day and the each-way call has to be last year’s second-placed Pearl Secret, beaten half a length by Hot Streak.

The six-year-old had a nice pipe-opener at Longchamp earlier in the month which should have blown away the cobwebs and is taken top reverse form in that event with his 2014 conqueror.

Last year’s winner is of course a danger but the one I really fear is the Irish raider Great Minds trained by Tommy Stack.

This lightly raced but progressive charge has looked impressive on his last two starts this spring, winning a brace of listed races at Cork and Naas, the last of which was a three-quarters of a length success over Musical Comedy.

Of course he will need a career best effort to step up here but that was only the eighth start of his life and there is every reason to believe that there is plenty more to come from the son of Bahamian Bounty, especially if he gets his preferred give in the ground.

Of the other runners, Goldream is arguably a better horse on a quicker surface and on a stiffer track, Newmarket seems to serve him particularly well but all-weather winner Pretend can’t be ignored, although he still needs to prove he is as good on turf as he is on an artificial surface.

The two mile handicap at 2.00 has a nice betting shape to it and I am pretty keen to have an each-way wager on Seamour down at the bottom of the weights.

One of three Brian Ellison runners in the field for this big pot, the four-year-old impressed me during the national hunt season when readily landing his first two starts over hurdles after which I ploughed into him for the Triumph Hurdle.

However, a flat campaign was then conceived rather than take him to the Cheltenham Festival and he ran a nice starter at York last week when making good late headway to finish sixth behind Libran.

That should have put an edge on this improving young stayer and I believe a rating of 85 serves him very well despite the competitive nature of this race.

Elsewhere, at Haydock Park have a second glance at Goring at an each-way price in the Silver Bowl at 2.35 and top weight Eccleston in a six furlong sprint handicap at 4.20, the last named looks potentially well treated off a mark of 90.

Rousayan should get a nice tow through the race courtesy of Dr Red Eye in the Catterick 3.00 and can complete a double, while later on at the Yorkshire track Mezzotint is expected to have come on for his Goodwood run.

I hope that Aaron Jones doesn’t ride him too prominently as I have always thought that this well weighted six-year-old is better held off the pace.
