Under-fire Lerner will resign if Villa sale fails

UNDER-fire Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner said yesterday that he will resign as chairman in the summer if he fails to find a buyer for the club.

A perceived lack of investment in the club that saw them finish just three points above relegation has left fans unhappy with the club’s ownership.

US-born Lerner has been trying to sell the struggling club for just over a year and, despite an exciting FA Cup run that sees them face off against Arsenal in this weekend’s final, he has failed for find a buyer for the club he says is valued “in the £150 million to £200m (region).”

Speaking to the Times the beleaguered owner said: “I don’t disagree with the criticism.

“Yes, the club remains for sale. But as we’ve seen, ‘club for sale’ does not necessarily mean it will change hands so fast.

“I have had interest from nearly every corner of the globe,” he continued.

“This year plan A remains to find a buyer if on the cards or, plan B, find a new chairman.”
