Venezuelan communists demand investigations into killings of party cadre

THE Venezuelan Communist Party (PCV) has demanded exhaustive investigations after the killing of two party cadres close to the border with Colombia.

“Less than three months after the murder of communist militant and popular communicator Jose Urbina in Apure, our comrade and PCV social leader Juan de Dios Hernandez has been kidnapped and murdered,” general secretary Oscar Figuera said earlier this week.

The two communists had been active in the same cell in a region where clashes between the Venezuelan and Colombian armed forces have continued for the past year.

According to right-wing NGO FundaREDES, Mr Hernandez was kidnapped by armed militia in his home town of Puerto Paez on March 25, with his body found two days later.

Mr Figuera said the authorities must carry out an urgent investigation.

“Enough institutional silence and denying justice for PCV murdered militants,” he said.

The communists claim to have been subjected to increased oppression from Venezuelan state forces.

Last year, President Nicolas Maduro accused the PCV of being “agents of imperialism.”

He warned that the party was trying to divide the Venezuelan revolutionary movement after it announced it would field candidates against his ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela.
