LEEDS asylum-seeker Orashia Edwards has been released after his fourth period in detention, writes Peter Lazenby.

His friends condemned immigration authorities for putting him through a “horrendous ordeal.”

Mr Edwards is a bisexual man from Jamaica, which has an growing reputation for homophobic violence. He fears for his life if deported.

He was arrested for the fourth time a month ago and locked up in Morton Hall detention centre in Lincolnshire, where he says he received death threats because of his sexuality.

Family and friends in Leeds and the Leeds No Borders group which is campaigning for Mr Edwards to be granted asylum welcomed him home on Thursday.

Leeds No Borders said: “This continuing state of uncertainty has had a profound impact on his mental and physical well-being.

“Orashia must never be detained again and we urge the Home Office to grant him asylum immediately so he can finally rebuild his life in peace.”
