JEERS for the Spanish national anthem reached 119 decibels, the same as a plane taking off, on Saturday night as Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the Spanish Cup final.
A brace from Lionel Messi either side of a Neymar goal clinched the match for the Catalan club but the match will be remembered by the deafening noise prior to kick-off, aimed at King Felipe VI.
President of Spain’s Higher Sports Council Miguel Cardenal said after the match that he was adamant that both clubs would be punished.
He said: “It should not happen under any circumstances. If it is behaviour violating the anti-violence order then we will have to look at it to see action will be taken.
“It would not be normal for some forms of behaviour that go against the regulations to go unpunished. We are convinced it will be punished.”
Cardenal also hinted that both clubs could be investigated for their fans’ behaviour.
“We’ll have to see what measures the clubs have put in place to avoid it,” he said.
“If there are organisations that have supplied objects and promoted it then they could also be responsible. Some institutions have supplied material.
“When we have all the information we can make an assessment. The greatest responsibility will be for people and institutions outside of football. It was an attempt to contaminate a sporting event.”
