University staff walk out over jobs and closures

WORKERS at two universities in London and Wales are to take industrial action over cuts.

London Metropolitan University academics will stage a one-day strike on Thursday over job cuts.

And staff at the University of South Wales’s Newport City and Caerleon campuses have voted for industrial action over the closure of its art foundation course and four redundancies.

“Closing this course will leave the people of Newport without a vital learning opportunity — which is more bad news for a region already suffering cuts to education,” said academics’ union UCU Wales official Margaret Phelan.

Union members meet today to plan their action.

The London strike will also involve members of public service union Unison.

The unions are in dispute over plans to axe 165 jobs.
