Nicola Adams set her sights on making boxing history yesterday as she steps up her plans for her Olympic title defence.

The 32-year-old will fight for Team GB in the first European Games in Baku this month.

Adams became the first woman to win boxing gold at the Olympics when she beat Ren Cancan in the flyweight final at London 2012.

And she is eyeing another gold in Rio next year as she prepares for her European Games debut.

“To be a double Olympic champion is definitely my main goal and we have never had one in GB for boxing so I would love to be that person and make history again,” she said.

“The European Games are exciting, it’s the first of its kind and another chance for me to make history again to be the first female boxer to box in the European Games.

“I’m going to be up against the best boxers in Europe so it’s going to be exciting for me to see where I’m at and where I need to improve.

“We have the best of the best in the men and the women we are hopefully going to come away with some nice shiny medals.”

The European Games come just over a year before Rio 2016 and Adams believes they are a useful addition to the calendar.

“It’s about time, you have the Asian Games and the Pan American Games so it’s a good one for Europe to have. It’s going to be interesting, it’ll be good to see all the other sports,” she said.

“The only time you see boxing regularly on the TV is the Olympics so it’s nice to see a bit more boxing.

“It’s a good opportunity for boxing to put ourselves out there and we have a big strong team and hopefully we are going to come away with a lot of medals.”
