Peace campaigners hold vigil outside US intelligence-gathering base in North Yorkshire

A US intelligence-gathering base in North Yorkshire was targeted by peace campaigners on Tuesday night with a vigil calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.

The event at Menwith Hill, between Harrogate and Skipton in North Yorkshire, saw placards displayed bearing messages such as “Russia get out! Nato stay out!”

Menwith Hill, nominally an RAF base but run by the US National Security Agency, has highly visible radomes that receive military, political and economic intelligence gathered by US satellites.

The vigil was organised by Yorkshire CND, with CND groups from Leeds, Bradford, Calder Valley and Burnley in attendance, and by the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign, which stages weekly vigils at the base.

As it was Shrove Tuesday, demonstrators cooked and ate pancakes outside the base.

CND national chairman Dave Webb said: “Cooking pancakes was the original plan. It turned into a vigil for the Ukraine situation.

“Menwith Hill is surrounded in secrecy, but we know they will be looking at communications going back and forth.”
