Bodies of 15 refugees who drowned trying to reach Europe found at opposite ends of the Mediterranean

THE bodies of 15 refugees who drowned trying to reach Europe were found today at opposite ends of the Mediterranean.

At least nine people died after their boat capsized off the Tunisian coast, the country’s defence ministry said. Two naval units had rescued nine others involved in the accident but some were in critical condition and might not survive, it added, while searches for other possible passengers were ongoing.

The Tunisian coastguard intercepted about 20,000 people trying to reach Europe by sea last year, according to the Tunisian Forum for Economic & Social Rights.

At Europe’s south-east periphery, the Greek coastguard reported recovering the bodies of six people from the shore of the island of Lesbos.

There were no signs of a shipwreck and authorities did not receive any calls relating to a vessel in distress in the area, they said, but launched a search-and-rescue operation to look for others. The unidentified refugees were thought to be trying to reach Greece from Turkey.
