Thousands of women affected by protests outside abortion clinics, Labour MP warns

THOUSANDS of women are being affected by protests outside abortion clinics, Labour MP Dr Rupa Huq told the Commons today.

The MP for Ealing Central and Acton has introduced a private member’s Bill to restrict demonstrations in the vicinity of abortion clinics.

She said: “We can all agree that women going about their lawful business free from intimidation should be able to use public spaces.

“Yet, every day thousands are affected by protests outside abortion clinics that are designed to shame women out of their legal rights to healthcare.”

Dr Huq asked Home Secretary Priti Patel if she could meet with her to ensure that “we have consistency nationally about the situation."

Ms Patel said that she would be “very happy” to meet with her, saying: “All the points that she has raised are absolutely valid that women should be able to go around and live their lives freely, safely and without harassment.”
