FORMER News of the World editor Andy Coulson walked free yesterday after being cleared of perjury by a two-week trial at Edinburgh’s High Court.
Mr Coulson, whose role in the phone hacking scandal landed him with 18 months in prison, was accused of lying under oath during the trial of ex-MSP Tommy Sheridan.
But the trial of Prime Minister David Cameron’s one-time adviser collapsed after a judge upheld that he had no case to answer.
Leaving court, Mr Coulson told the press: “I am obviously delighted by the judge’s decision today. It was the right decision. This prosecution was always wrong.
“I didn’t lie and the prosecution, in my view, was a gross waste of public money.
“I am just delighted that after four pretty testing years that my family and myself have finally had a good day.”
At the hearing, judge Lord Burns said there had not been “sufficient evidence to satisfy” the court that Mr Coulson had provided false evidence at Mr Sheridan’s trial.
