China likened to Nazis over new islands

FILIPINO President Benigno Aquino compared China’s island-building to Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia yesterday.

Mr Aquino was talking about Chinese land reclamation work in the South China Sea while on a state visit to Japan, his sixth in five years.

In a speech in Tokyo, he criticised China’s “unlawful territorial claim.”

When asked about Washington’s role in the dispute, Mr Aquino said the US presence was key to regional stability.

He then recalled the failure to check Germany’s expansion in the 1930s, referring to documentaries as saying the war might have been stopped if someone had protested.

“What if somebody said ‘Stop’ to Hitler at that point in time?” Mr Aquino asked.

He and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe were to discuss military matters, including basing Japanese units in the Philippines.
