College staff strike to fight axing of jobs

STAFF at two London colleges were on strike yesterday over job cuts and the closure of a campus.

Lewisham & Southwark College plans to axe 112 jobs and shut its Camberwell site.

At London Metropolitan University, members of the University and College Union (UCU) and public service union Unison walked out to fight plans for 165 job cuts.

Strikers from both colleges staged rallies.

At Lewisham and Southwark, there were pickets at the Lewisham, Deptford, Camberwell and Waterloo campuses.

UCU regional official Una O’Brien said: “We believe that, by working together, we can find a way out of this crisis.”
