Refuse workers’ work refusal off

A STRIKE by London refuse workers was temporarily binned yesterday so fresh talks can be held in a bid to resolve a long-running pay dispute.

Refuse drivers in the city’s Barking and Dagenham borough have staged a series of strikes recently in protest at plans they say would lead to pay cuts of £1,000.

A joint statement from borough bosses and general union GMB said talks will look at the current and future working relationship between the parties with the aim of improving relations.

GMB national officer Brian Strutton said: “It’s good news for Barking and Dagenham residents that this dispute is moving from the streets to the negotiating table.”

Barking and Dagenham Council chief executive Chris Naylor said: “I welcome the opportunity to draw a line under the recent dispute and get back round the table to talk about how we work more constructively with the GMB in the future.”
