THIS year’s series of People’s Press Printing Society AGMs came to a successful conclusion last Monday with the London meeting, after a whistlestop nationwide tour taking in Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and Cardiff.
Members met management committee chairman Bob Oram, newly appointed Morning Star editor Ben Chacko, interim secretary Chris Guiton and circulation manager Bernadette Keaveney.
They endorsed the accounts and gave their support to a report from the PPPS management committee and a political report by the editor, as well as voting in favour of five resolutions tabled by members.
The following were elected unopposed to the PPPS management committee: Mr Oram, Wilf Sullivan, Jamshid Ahmadi, Mary Davis, Rosie Eagleson, Anita Halpin, Dave Moxham, Christiane Ohsan, Ruth Winters, Rob Miller, Tom Gill and Tosh McDonald.
There was lively discussion on a range of issues, including the challenges facing the working class in the wake of the election, the unique role played by the Star in the labour movement, the importance of delivering the paper’s 1,000 New Readers campaign and the important role of readers and supporters groups in raising the paper’s profile.
A grand total of £1,652 was collected for the paper’s Fighting Fund. A significant amount of money was also raised through share purchases and merchandise sales.
Mr Guiton said: “It was great to get out there and meet our supporters, talk to them about our achievements and plans and to tap into the tremendous well of support and affection that exists for the Morning Star.”
