Rotherham Advertiser: Hundreds march for victimised rep

HUNDREDS of trade unionists marched through Rotherham on Saturday in support of an activist singled out for redundancy.

Reporter Phil Turner has worked at the Rotherham Advertiser for more than 30 years.

Mr Turner is the paper’s National Union of Journalists (NUJ) father of chapel — equivalent to shop steward — and has served on the union’s national executive.

After the South Yorkshire paper was taken over by a new chief executive, Turner was selected for compulsory redundancy — the only employee targeted out of a 14-strong staff.

The NUJ says his selection is blatant victimisation.

Saturday’s protest march and rally was backed by the Yorkshire and Humber region of the TUC and local trade union councils.

Banners raised included those of public service union Unison, Unite and the National Union of Teachers.

Mr Turner’s colleagues will strike for 24 hours in his support on Thursday.
