Congress Diary with Conrad Landin

IT’S been a big year for TUC president Mohammed Taj — and all of it was neatly summed up in a snazzy Powerpoint accompanied by electro beats.

There was plenty on his record as an “activist president,” on his record as the first bus driver to reach the top rung, the huge number of rallies he’d addressed.

So impressive he also found time for a meeting with Boris Becker — now that’s an ace if ever I saw one.

And, Taj tells congress, he’s ever so grateful to his bosses at First Bradford, who carried on paying his salary in his year as president.

“I still don’t know if it was because they were proud to have one of their drivers in such a prestigious role, or they were just glad to see the back of me for 12 months,” he quipped.

Meanwhile, in honour of Kate Bush’s ongoing live run in London, the Hounds of Love have been haunting the echoey corridors of the Adelphi hotel.

Once the jewel in Liverpool’s crown — where Harold Wilson stayed on his regular visits to the city — its fading grandeur has become a bargain bet for the best of the best.

Including Che, canine friend of CND activists Kate Hudson and Andrew Burgin. Look out for this delegate — he’ll go far.
