SINN FEIN (SF) received a boost in the run-up to the by-elections yesterday when an Irish Times opinion poll put the republican party level with government party Fine Gael for the first time.
The party is hopeful of winning both parliamentary seats up for grabs.
Fianna Fail candidate Councillor Ivan Connaughton from Athleague is favourite to triumph in Roscommon-South Leitrim, but he is closely pursued by Sinn Fein’s Martin Kenny.
Mr Kenny says that voters are fed up with broken promises from Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.
SF candidate Cathal King is in pole position in the Dublin South-West contest, although late support is coming in for Trotskyist former MEP Paul Murphy, who is standing for the Anti Austerity Alliance.
Mr King’s position has not been helped by SF vice-president Mary-Lou McDonald’s humiliating apology to Mr Murphy after quoting a bogus Facebook post that misrepresented his position on the issue of water charges.
