Hong Kong cancels talks with students

SENIOR Hong Kong government official Carrie Lam announced yesterday the cancellation of talks with student leaders scheduled for today.

Chief Secretary Ms Lam said that the talks would not go ahead because they were unlikely to be constructive.

She added that dialogue had been “seriously undermined” by remarks from the student leaders.

Student leaders had urged their supporters hours earlier to redouble their efforts to occupy the main protest zone — a key thoroughfare outside government headquarters that they have dubbed Umbrella Square.

They called on them to to bring their tents and to camp out on the main road.

The road outside the government offices was occupied by thousands of protesters on September 28 who later defied police attempts to disperse them through the use of tear gas.

However, the number of demonstrators has declined substantially since then as schools, colleges and workplaces have reopened after the national holiday period.
