Scottish firefighters could be sent to heart attack victims

SCOTTISH firefighters could be drawn in to help heart attack victims before ambulances as a way of pulling resources

A new report by the Chief Inspector of Fire Services revealed on Thursday said firefighters’ defibrillators — meant for use on fire crew members if they suffer heart attacks while on call — could be used more widely for medical emergencies.

The firefighters union said it was in negotiations Scottish Fire and Rescue Service over use of defibrillators, but warned against a “quick fix.”

FBU Scotland executive member Roddy Robertson said: “We need to be able to sort out a number of issues, including insurance and liability, and training of firefighters.”
