Firefighters assaulted 250 times in line of duty

WELSH firefighters have faced more than 250 “disgraceful” attacks while carrying out their life-saving work, Plaid Cymru revealed yesterday.

A party freedom-of-information request revealed a shocking catalogue of physical and verbal attacks that have taken place since 2010.

There have been 129 physical and verbal assaults on firefighters in south Wales, 64 in mid and west Wales and 58 in north Wales.

Physical attacks included people throwing objects at people and engines.

Fire Brigades Union Wales secretary Cerith Griffiths called for a “zero-tolerance attitude” to the abuse.

“Attacks on firefighters are not only unwarranted but dangerous,” he said.

Plaid Cymru public services spokesman and Welsh Assembly member Rhodri Glyn Thomas said: “Firefighters risk their safety in the line of duty. It is disgraceful that they are threatened while they go about their work.”

He added: “The UK Westminster Government should not be attacking the pensions of these brave men and women.”
