Yorkshire’s struggling coal industry suffered another blow yesterday as consultation opened on the closure of a coking plant and the loss of 120 jobs.
The 130-year-old Monckton coking plant at Royston will likely be shut down in December.
Coke workers’ union GMB regional officer Steve Morris said the union had been informed yesterday.
“I expect the plant to close soon after that,” he said. “The shop stewards have been expecting this news. The plant is linked to a coalfield that no longer exists. This is a sad day.”
Yorkshire has two of Britain’s last three deep coal mines. Kellingley faces closure next year. Worker-owned Hatfield is fighting for survival.
