Cuban Ebola conference agrees action plan

Alba summit agrees on plan combating disease

Two dozen epidemiology experts and health officials from 24 American countries issued an agreed document today laying out "lines of action" to be followed in combating Ebola.

The statement arose from a two-day conference in Havana that was organised by the progressive Alba (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America) regional grouping set up by Cuba and Venezuela.

The participants agreed on procedures in tackling such questions as the establishment of epidemiological monitoring centres and co-ordinating the transport of biological samples.

Both the US and Canada took part in the conference, indicating recognition of Cuba's pre-eminent role in assisting stricken African states in treating Ebola.

The meeting was part of Cuba's anti-Ebola effort that includes sending at least 256 doctors and nurses to west Africa last month.

Cuba, the US and Canada do not have full diplomatic relations but have co-operated discreetly for years on subjects such as public health, immigration and environmental protection.
