186 jobs go as KP closes site

A SNACKS factory in County Durham is to close with the loss of 186 jobs.

General union GMB has expressed its “exceptional disappointment” that bosses at the KP factory in former steel town Consett has rejected a union plan to save the factory.

The factory used to operate under the name Phineas Fogg producing snacks such as Hula Hoops.

KP blamed “overheads” for the closure.

GMB organiser Suzanne Reid said: “This is a devastating blow for our members, their families, and the community of Consett. The workforce is dedicated, skilled and passionate.”

KP has other two factories in the nearby communities of Billingham and Tanfield. GMB is negotiating with the firm over possible redeployment of the redundant workers.
