Peaceful rally over dam death ends in violence

Police fire tear gas at protesters commemorating killed Fraisse

Large peaceful marches in French cities to protest at the death of anti-dam demonstrator Remi Fraisse at the weekend culminated in clashes between riot police and groups of young people.

Police fired tear-gas canisters to disperse protesters lighting fires in Nantes, western France.

Similar unrest broke out in the south-western city of Toulouse, where authorities said that some rioters among mostly peaceful protesters had smashed bank windows and destroyed public property.

The rallies were called to honour 21-year-old protester Mr Fraisse, who died last week in clashes between police and demonstrators near the south-western town of Lisle-sur-Tarn - not far from the site of the dam.

President Francois Hollande has called for an investigation into his death and an autopsy found that a wound on his back had been caused by an explosion.
