Salmond refuses to rule out return to Westminster

Alex Salmond has refused to rule out a return to Westminster when he steps down as SNP leader later this month.

Speculation has been rife that Mr Salmond will stand to be an MP in May to clear the way for Nicola Sturgeon’s leadership at Holyrood.

He served as MP for Banff and Buchan between 1987 and April 2010 — during which time he was also an MSP, SNP leader and First Minister of Scotland.

And he told the Andrew Marr show yesterday: “I am going to make up my mind in a few weeks” about a return to the green benches.

“The things I’ve said is I intend to continue in politics and I intend to continue to represent the people of the north-east of Scotland if they wish to elect me,” he said.

Mr Salmond also predicted voters will punish Labour “for a generation” for working “hand-in-glove” with the Tories in the Better Together campaign.
