Taliban attacks kill five people on Shi'ite Afghanistan public holiday

TALIBAN attacks killed five people yesterday as Afghanistan marked a major Shi’ite holiday.

Kandahar provincial Deputy Governor Abdul Qadeem Patyall, who was studying to be a teacher, died after being shot through the window of a classroom at Kandahar University.

Gunmen also killed Judge Abdul Majid as he returned home from a mosque in Feroz Koh, the capital of Ghor province, said the provincial governor’s spokesman.

Violence intensified yesterday when a bomb exploded in the crowded main bazaar of Gardez in eastern Paktia province, killing three civilians and wounding 14, said local police chief General Zelmai Oryakhail.
