Marsden workers' club taken over by community

A HISTORIC Yorkshire workers’ club will be taken over by the community it has served for more than 150 years this month.

Kirklees District Council currently owns Marsden Mechanics Hall, built in 1861.

But Marsden Community Trust has been set up to run the Grade II-listed building and there will be a public meeting at the club to mark its inauguration at 7.30pm on November 24.

Locals established the club as an educational institution for millworkers and it has hosted lectures, meeting, concerts and dances for a century.

Today it is venue for community groups, social events, a library and base for progressive theatre group Mikron.
