Venezuelan workers can expect a 15 per cent increase in the minimum wage from December 1 to ease the pain of a politically stoked rising cost of living.
President Nicolas Maduro, who announced the higher level on Monday evening, blames soaring consumer prices on the "economic war" launched by big business through price-gouging, hoarding and speculating.
"I have decided to accept this proposal from the workers to decree a 15 per cent rise in the minimum salary from December 1," he declared during a televised event with workers.
The president said that the cumulative rise for 2014, following boosts of 30 per cent in May and 10 per cent in January, would compensate for inflation caused by the "criminal" campaign against the government.
Mr Maduro announced last week that he would increase pay for armed forces members by 45 per cent, noting that the services "are made up of workers who guarantee peace, stability and protection for our country."
