The flat turf season finally signs off with the November Handicap at Doncaster and a massive field of 23 set to race at 3.35.
It’s a real mixture of unexposed youngsters and solid handicappers and I fancy that we will see an almighty run from Luca Cumani’s second string Sir Walter Scott especially with the wet weather forecast.
When I first looked at the weights earlier in the week I liked the look of Dark Ruler and the mare Headline News, both of which will relish conditions especially as there appears to be more rain on the way, but the more I look at the selection the better his claims appear.
His eye-catching run came on his first outing for the maestro Newmarket trainer since he came from Aiden O’Brien when he made really good late headway at Newbury to finish a closing sixth to Amralah in the Steventon Stakes, form which has been franked in no uncertain terms since then.
A cracking running on seventh in the Ebor Handicap followed and in his two subsequent outings the pace simply wasn’t hot enough for him to bring his stamina into play.
This time around there will surely be no hanging about and with plenty of dig in the ground and the long run down the stretch I think the set-up of the race will suit him perfectly.
Of course in a race of this value in such a big field there are a whole host of dangers including the other two horses I have mentioned already.
Stable mate Mount Logan is a C&D winner and remains unexposed, but I am not sure he wants a bog, but First Mohican, Dashing Star and youngster Farquhar will all act on the ground and have solid each-way chances at various prices.
I have always been a big fan of Jamaican Bolt and he finally had his pay day this season when winning over six furlongs here last time out. Following that race William Buick said he was crying out for seven furlongs, hence his entry in the 1.50, but I just feel he may find last year’s winner Levitate too strong.
John Quinn’s charge won the 2013 renewal off a mark of 98 and this year gets to race off 95.
It follows a barren early season campaign but there have been signs on his last two outings that he is running back into form.
The more rain the better for the selection and he gets the vote over the ‘Bolt’ and the other big players, the Fahey pair in my eyes Farlow and Roachdale House.
Elsewhere on the card, Aetna looks the value in the Listed Wentworth Stakes at 2.25 ahead of Tropics and Jack Dexter, while Fieldgunner Kirkup can spring a surprise in the finale at 4.05.
Iving should land the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton at 3.15, while at Sandown Gary Moore should have a double courtesy of Chris Pea Green (1.20) and newcomer Stonegate (4.10).
