RMT ballots cleaners for strike action

Interserve failing to treat staff with 'even the most basic levels of human dignity'

A notorious private contractor may face complete shutdown across London, after rail union RMT announced cleaners will be balloted for strike action.

Interserve, whose staff at Waterloo station are already set to strike on Monday, has been given notice of a ballot covering cleaners at other London locations.

Reps say there has been a "breakdown in industrial relations" as a result of management refusing to deal with the union. Aggrieved staff are also protesting against poverty pay.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "It is clear that Interserve are not prepared to treat their workforce with even the most basic levels of human dignity and it is also clear to us that they have adopted an aggressively anti-union stance designed to try to derail proper representation of the staff who are subject to daily hostility and bullying.

"The union remains available for talks but the message is clear, transport cleaners are on the march and both the company and those that hire them need to wake up and take notice."
